How many times did you, or your friends, order a dish at the restaurant and leave half of it on the plate? Did you know, that food goes directly in the trash? It isn’t easy to truly understand how much of it is wasted in restaurants, cafes, pubs…due to this bad habit of ordering much more than what we really want or can eat. Trash & Treasure is a social experiment that wants to highlight this topic. The aim is to raise awareness and encourage thoughts around wasted food.
We faced this challenge making an embarrassing gesture: going around the town, collecting all the food left on tables from different restaurants or cafes and putting everything in a glass jar. The action itself of taking food from someone else’s table and putting it in the same container, intrigued and shocked the people seated at the other tables. It is a weird behaviour indeed, but the purpose was exactly to stimulate a discussion about it, about us collecting food leftovers from strangers’ tables, and why not, maybe about the food wasted itself.
The result of the experiment is a funny video where you can clearly appreciate people’s reactions, together with a jar of whatever kind of food all mixed together: from focaccia, sausages, to cappuccino foam and pieces of a croissant. What could we do now, with this jar of leftovers in order to keep pushing the subject?
