Imp(i)atto is an interdisciplinary experience which aims to show clearly and frankly our food-related impact on the Planet. Hosted in a white room, we designed an aperitivo of leftovers and set up a plastic packaging exhibition. The impact we produce depends on what we put in our plate, what we choose when at the supermarket and also at home. Small everyday actions could strongly reduce our waste, both the organic and the packaging ones.
Imp(i)atto wants to stress the use of leftovers, visually showing the amount of food, a potential resource, often wasted. In order to do that, we filled transparent containers with the vegetables parts as skin and leaves usually discarded, but absolutely edible, and we planned a menu based on using every part of each vegetable.
Moreover, we aimed to stimulate a conversation about vegetable packaging waste, commonly plastic. As a matter of fact, Italy produces 7.2 million tons of plastic every year, and of that, only the 9% can be recycled, the remaining part gets lost in the environment. Therefore, we went gathering plastic packaging around the streets of Catania, and we hung them, designing a plastic exhibition which clearly displayed the quantity of plastic we buy and then throw away.
Nevertheless, our goal wasn’t just to highlight a fundamental issue, but especially to propose simple solutions like choosing to buy loose vegetables and fruit. Furthermore, scanning the qr code on the menu, people could access to the receipts developed for the aperitivo which includes the using of every part of each vegetable: beetroot burger, focaccia filled with beet leaves, beetroot fried skin and so on with carrots, long zucchini (typical Sicilian squash) and celery.
The result was a nice and colloquial evening during which we had the opportunity to discuss about these topics and to give advices about how to reduce the impact, sharing the ideas that “the best waste is no waste”.
